Community action needs for rehabilitation after floods
24/07/2007 UNICEF has emphasized on the need for community intervention in the aftermath of flooding in the east Indian state of Orissa. 200 youth volunteers were trained and given pamphlets on safe water and sanitation and the state government also responded by releasing a relief package for the affected people.

24/07/2007 Displaced people living in squalid shelters on the fringes of an official displacement camp in Sudan’s North Darfur region lack relief services as the official camp is full. Efforts by a visiting British official this week to persuade local authorities to open a new site to accommodate the overflow of Al Salaam camp near El Fasher, capital of North Dafur state, failed. Dozens of displaced families said they came here about 14 months ago from villages in North Darfur, fleeing renewed fighting in the region, but were not allowed to settle in the Al Salam camp proper, which already hosts 50,000 IDPs

18/07/2007 Insecurity in North Kivu province in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has led to the displacement of an estimated 650,000 civilians, the largest number of people to have fled their homes because of conflict in the region in the past three years, a spokesman for the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said.

11/07/2007 A government operation forcing businesses to reduce prices by 50 percent will drive manufacturing under, push unemployment up and bolster the informal market as basic commodities become scarcer, analysts have warned.
A new task force, set up to monitor and enforce compliance, ordered manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and other service providers to reduce their prices to 18 June levels; but a simultaneous salary increase for civil servants, which topped 600 percent, sent the prices of basic commodities, clothing and transport fares shooting up.
