WASHINGTON, Apr 28 (OneWorld) - Far away and close to home the growing world food crisis is taking a toll. While Americans are increasingly shocked at their rising grocery bills, hunger threatens lives and stability in several developing countries.

Continuing food crisis in Afghanistan is frustrating people as several cities witness protests, riots and looting. While people blame government for this crisis, experts attribute it to both local and global factors. The country would need over half-a-million tonnes of imported wheat to meet the current demand.

WASHINGTON, Apr 27 (OneWorld) - Occasionally, OneWorld.net will put out an alert when many of the NGOs we work with are taking on a breaking issue. Over the past year, we've done this for the crisis in Kenya, Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh, and the earthquake that struck Peru in August. But this week's alert on the growing global food crisis is perhaps the most worrying one we've ever sent.

Zimbabwen kirkot alkavat vastaanottaa maan poliittista väkivaltaa paenneita, Zimbabwen kirkkojen kattojärjestö päätti kuluvalla viikolla. Lähes kuukauden takaisten vaalien jälkeen hallitsevan puolueen masinoiman väkivallan kohteeksi ovat joutuneet opposition kannattajat. Kirkkojen kattojärjestön mukaan tilanne muistuttaa sotaa.

UN Secretary-General has assured Afghanistan that his agency will not move out of the country as long as development needs of the strive-torn nation are not met. He warned that the cost of disengagement would be far greater than the cost of engagement and underlined the need for continued effort by international community.

Aid has made a big difference to Afghan lives, but major weaknesses have severely constrained its capacity to reduce poverty. ACBR’s report Falling short: Aid effectiveness in Afghanistan published by Oxfam reveals that donors have failed to meet their aid pledges and much of the aid is wasted, ineffective or uncoordinated.
