YK:n kehitysjärjestö UNDP:n mukaan 2,4 miljardia ihmistä elää ilman nykyajan energiapalveluita, joita tarvitaan muun muassa ruoan valmistukseen, lämmitykseen ja valaistukseen. Ruuan valmistaminen ilman kunnon liettä altistaa hengitystiesairauksille. Runsaasta polttopuun keräämisestä taas aiheutuu ympäristöhaittoja, UNDP:n seminaarissa todettiin.
