Transparency International’s new report calls on leading oil and gas companies for greater transparency in payments made to governments of resource-rich countries. Host governments need to enforce and enact regulations for an equitable exploitation of their oil and gas wealth to help fight poverty, the report adds.

A discussion paper by WaterAid, Creating user-friendly water and sanitation services for the disabled, takes a look at the social, technical, financial and policy barriers faced by the disabled in meeting water and sanitation needs in Nepal. The document recommends designing proper technologies to facilitate their access to basic services.

Millions of volunteers will visit every household in the country in the coming years to gather information on changing demographics, in a census that will reveal how economic growth has affected its people. India’s population is expected to climb to 1.19 billion in 2011 from 1.13 billion in 2008, say officials.

Continuing food crisis in Afghanistan is frustrating people as several cities witness protests, riots and looting. While people blame government for this crisis, experts attribute it to both local and global factors. The country would need over half-a-million tonnes of imported wheat to meet the current demand.

Shreekrishna Kalamb, a poet-farmer in Vidarbha region of western India, ended his life on March 24. His death and those of 250 others, who have committed suicide since January, are symbolic of an agrarian crisis that the country is reeling under for past many years.

Kehidupan korban pelanggaran HAM pun sangat memprihatinkan. Mereka pun rata-rata bekerja sebagai buruh. Saat ini masih banyak anak-anak dari korban pelanggaran HAM yang putus sekolah karena penghasilan orangtuanya sebagai buruh tidak mencukupi. Karena itu, anak-anak mereka berhak atas pendidikan yang layak, kesehatan, tempat tinggal yang layak, yang semuanya harus diberikan pemerintah secara gratis.

Ketentuan ini sebenarnya sudah diatur dalam pasal 22 UU No 18 Tahun 2003 tentang Advokat. Aturan teknis terkait UU itu agar bisa direalisasikan, segera dikeluarkan.
