30/06/2005 Cipsi e Emmaus Italia aderiscono alla denuncia e alle proposte sulla “crisi idrica” fatte da Rosario Lembo del Comitato Italiano Contratto Mondiale dell'Acqua. "Le priorità e le questioni più urgenti da affrontare sono: acqua per tutti sul pianeta Terra, e lotta alla miseria" ha dichiarato Guido Barbera, presidente del CIPSI. “E' una delle conseguenze del voler ostinarsi a considerare l'acqua come qualsiasi altra merce. L'acqua è un bene comune che appartiene a tutti" precisa Graziano Zoni, presidente di Emmaus Italia.

30/06/2005 Il presidente della Regione Puglia, Nichi Vendola ha annunciato che Riccardo Petrella del Contratto Mondiale sull'acqua sarà il nuovo presidente dell'Acquedotto pugliese. Questa scelta politica scongiura la fase di privatizzazione che era considerata la conclusione del processo di “societarizzazione”, avvenuto nel 1999, che ha trasformato l’Ente Autonomo Acquedotto Pugliese in una società per azioni. Una buona notizia arriva anche da Napoli dove la gara di appalto per l’affidamento della gestione ai privati dei servizi idrici di Napoli e Caserta è stata sospesa. Dopo la forte pressione arrivata dalle organizzazioni partenopee costituitesi in un ‘Comitato Civico in Difesa dell’acqua’ si è ottenuta una presa di posizione> da parte del Sindaco di Napoli e del Presidente della Provincia di Caserta a cui si sono aggiunti 30 Sindaci . L’assemblea Ato a quindi deciso di sospendere la decisione fino al 15 settembre studiando nel mente la possibilità di una gestione "in house".

A slum in India
10/06/2005 India, which has the second-largest urban population next only to China, will have to pay more attention to the urban poor as they they sometimes live in conditions even worse off than than their rural counterparts. Dr. Siddharth Agarwal and Dr. K. Kaushik from USAID-EHP Urban Health Program say that nearly 67 million people in Indian slums need better health water and sanitation facilities.

Waste Concern workers unload trash at a composting site in Dhaka
10/06/2005 At the Matuail dumpsite in Bangladesh mountains of rotting garbage produce toxic greenhouse gases and bacteria. But in an innovative NGO project, organic material, with a little help from microorganisms and the climate, is composted into fertilizer. The model has proven so successful that Bangladesh's government has helped to replicate it in 14 cities across the country.
