MELBOURNE, Mar 28 (IPS) - Organisers of Earth Hour 2008 estimate that in excess of 30 million people worldwide will take action on Saturday to raise awareness of how small changes can make big differences when it comes to climate change.

Greenpeace has warned that if current levels of emissions of greenhouses gases are not curtailed and global warming is not kept below 2-degree point, a major humanitarian crisis is awaiting the South Asian region. This can result in massive displacement of 125 million people in India and Bangladesh alone.

Black carbon or soot is the second largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide and causes 1.6 million deaths worldwide every year. Using smoke free cookers and making economies less carbon intensive can curb soot emissions, says a study released in a British journal.
