17/10/2007 Oggi quasi un miliardo di persone, 980 milioni per l'esattezza, vive in condizioni di estrema povertà con meno di un dollaro al giorno. Lo riportano le Nazione Unite nella "Giornata internazionale di lotta alla povertà" che si è celebrata oggi, 17 ottobre. A vent'anni dalla prima Giornata internazionale, l'Africa sub-sahariana continua a mantenere il triste primato con un numero di poveri pressochè invariato che supera i 300 milioni. Secondo la Banca Mondiale, se il trend attuale continua la povertà diminuirà entro il 2015 solo del 10%, ben lontano dal primo degli Obiettivi del Millennio, il dimezzamento della povertà nel mondo. Per questo oggi la Campagna internazionale per gli Obiettivi ha chiesto a tutti di "Stand up", alzare la propria voce per richiamare i leader di governo a mettere in atto politiche per realizzare gli Obiettivi stabiliti all'Onu nel 2000.
