30/08/2005 The Botswana government's attorney has dismissed foreign financial support for the Bushmen - with whom the administration is locked in a land dispute - as "Europeans telling us what to do and what not to do...but we really don't care, and we resent their involvement in our affairs."

30/08/2005 The government of Guatemala charges radio stations $28,000 for bandwidth, an inordinate sum for community radio stations that are operated by volunteers and typically have a two-to-five mile broadcast range. Consequently, bandwidth is rapidly being bought up by commercial radio stations that broadcast only in Spanish and do not address themes of concern to the Maya population. The remaining bandwidth is often usurped by wealthy evangelical interest groups.

23/08/2005 Ampam Karakras is a man on a mission. A Shuar from the Ecuadorian Amazon, he recalls the days when the Shuar (or Jivaro as they were then known to Westerners) were famed for their secret technique of shrinking human heads. As a youth, he was sent to boarding schools run by Salesian Catholic priests where he learned Spanish and was educated in Western ways. But unlike indigenous boarding school experiences in other parts of the world, Ampam’s years among the Salesians strengthened his appreciation both for the value of education and for the Shuar people and their culture.

23/08/2005 American Indian activists applauded a new policy that bans colleges and universities who display "offensive or hostile" racial/ethnic mascots from hosting championship sports events. College athletic programs have long appropriated Indian names, rituals and practices, which "ridicule and denigrate" the contemporary Indian community, said the activists.

22/08/2005 At the 2005 commencement ceremony held at UBC, all the indigenous students receiving degrees refused to shake hands with UBC's Chancellor. They refused because of his use of a quote from Thomas Hobbes' "Leviathan", in reference to the case known as "Delgamuuk", saying that before the "civilizing mission" from Europe entered the Americas, "aboriginal" peoples' lives were "nasty, short, and brutish."

22/08/2005 PLACHIMADA, India, Aug 21 (IPS) - In the end it was the ''generosity'' of Coca-Cola in distributing cadmium-laden waste sludge as ''free fertilizer'' to the tribal aborigines who live near the beverage giant's bottling plant in this remote Kerala village that proved to be its undoing.
