Participation of Indian women in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is an important intervention towards their empowerment. A recent survey of the scheme in western India reveals that single women have been denied its benefits due to conventional definition of male-headed households that treat them as dependents, says journalist Kiran Bhatty.

Punarbhava, a new interactive website for the disabled, is a one-stop cyber shop for information, aids, appliances, research and employment. The portal was recently launched at the Indian capital, along with the release of a new screen reader software for the blind.

Mumbai’s Sangini Women's Co-operative Bank is a beacon of hope for the sex workers of Kamathipura. By providing a monetary buffer to its red-light district clients, this small Indian bank seeks to change the lives of these women for the better by making them less vulnerable to debts.

BOGOTA, Mar 5 (OneWorld) - People who earn their living by sorting through and reselling municipal waste have reasserted their role as garbage recyclers and productive members of the global economy at an unprecedented event here this week.

Martedì scorso è stata presentata a Bologna la Rete Italiana di Microfinanza (RITMI), Associazione senza fini di lucro che opererà a livello nazionale e sarà la voce degli operatori italiani del microcredito e della microfinanza. Tra i soci fondatori ci sono l'Associazione Micro.bo Bologna, Fondazione don Mario Operti Torino, Fondazione Santa Maria del Soccorso Genova, Mag 2 Milano, Mag Verona, Microfinanza Srl, Microprogress e PerMicro Torino mentre altre sono in via di definizione. In Italia si contano una quarantina di iniziative di microcredito e microfinanza con 8.000 clienti e 75 milioni di euro di portafoglio. Secondo la Banca Mondiale gli esclusi dai servizi finanziari sono in Italia ben il 25% della popolazione adulta a fronte del 9% in Gran Bretagna, del 4% in Francia e solo dell’1% in Finlandia.
