The World Food Programme invites the online community to raise awareness on global hunger by participating in an international short video contest. The five most compelling clips, between 30-60 seconds in length, will be webcast through YouTube.

Google’s new mobile technology is able to track a user’s location within 400 metres. The tracking system, however, does not infringe upon a person’s privacy by not collecting a user’s phone number or any other personal details.

A new internet campaign has been launched by UNIFEM aiming at elimination of all forms of violence against women. Actress Nicole Kidman kicking off the campaign, urged all to put an end to this appalling human rights violation. Every third woman in the world suffers from violence and abuse in her lifetime.

Named Kindle, Amazon’s electronic book device, can hold as many as 200 titles from the list of best-sellers. Not bigger than a paperback novel and lighter, the device is wireless, allowing the books to be downloaded without plugging the reader into a computer.

“Even if we do not get democracy out of this, we have proved yet again that Pakistan is a democratic society trapped in an undemocratic state. The undersea broadband link would run from KwaZulu-Natal province’s far north coast to Mumbai in India, via Mozambique, Madagascar, Kenya, and Tanzania. Once ready, the Seacom project will provide an enormous 1.28 Terrabytes per second of broadband capacity.

Il tribunale civile di Bangalore ha emesso a fine settembre un mandato di arresto nei confronti di sette esponenti della Clean Clothes Campaign e dell’India Committee of the Netherlands, insieme al provider dei rispettivi siti e al fornitore della linea adsl, al fine di costringerli ad assistere alla prossima udienza del processo in corso che li vede imputati per "diffamazione via internet, razzismo e xenofobia" per aver diffuso informazioni sulle violazioni dei diritti dei lavoratori negli stabilimenti produttivi della FFI/JKPL, terzista indiano di noti marchi, primo fra tutti l’olandese G-Star, ma anche di nomi della moda italiana come Armani e RaRe. Il tribunale ha respinto la richiesta delle due organizzazioni di farsi rappresentare dai propri legali ed entro il 20 novembre dovrebbe decidere se il mandato di arresto avrà validità internazionale.

The second Internet Governance Forum that opened at Rio de Janeiro discussed ways to use the Internet for development, among other critical issues. Give One Get One (G1G1) campaign starting this week hopes to boost orders by providing an incentive to people in more prosperous countries. For every laptop donated for a child, the donor would get one in return. The campaign is backed by Google, Intel, eBay, News Corp and Advance Micro Devices.

FreeRice, an innovative internet-based vocabulary game is helping mobilise millions of people in the fight against global hunger. For every correct answer, the site donates ten grains of rice to the World Food Programme. One billion grains of rice have been donated in the last one month – enough to feed more than 50,000 people for one day.
