In a move to check rampant corruption and boost economic activities in the country, the Bangladesh government has decided to set up a Truth and Accountability Commission for businessmen to reveal information on fraudulent deals. People found guilty will be barred for five years from contesting any poll.

Amidst mounting pressure from the developing countries, the environment ministers of the G8 group of developed nations have urged their leaders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to half by 2050. The group seeks to build consensus on climate change at their annual summit in July this year.

The Indian government has announced an $ 80 million relief package for the 2002 victims of anti-Muslim riots in the western state of Gujarat. More than a thousand people, mostly Muslims, died in the state-backed violence sparked by an attack on a train carrying Hindu pilgrims.

The ruling Pakistan People's Party is siding with President Musharraf by backtracking on its promise to reinstate the deposed judiciary, alleges Nawaz Sharif's party. The coalition partner, after withdrawing from the government, has now decided to join nation-wide protests in favour of the sacked judges.

Indian government has decided to table the contentious Women’s Reservation Bill in Rajya Sabha on May 6. Earlier in an interview with OWSA, Dr Ranjana Kumari, Director, Centre for Social Research spoke on the whole gamut of issues concerning the need for women in governance.

Initially introduced in 1996 and subsequently in lapse; snatched and torn up in 1999, the contentious Women’s Reservation Bill is finally set to be tabled in Rajya Sabha on May 6. The Bill seeks to provide 33% reservation for women in state assemblies and the parliament.

Sri Lankan government’s decision to ease restrictions on fishing in Eastern Province, a territory hitherto controlled by LTTE rebels, will give much needed fillip to the industry – a major source of revenue for the country’s exchequer and livelihood for people.
