Corruption, restricted political rights and limited civil liberties are all factors that lie behind the planet’s growing water crisis, says a new United Nations report that focuses on the precious resource of fresh water. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said that the second edition of the UN World Water Development Report shows the global water crisis is largely a crisis of governing systems.

Hrvatska Vlada je u Narodnim novinama, službenom glasilu Republike Hrvatske objavila popis tijela javne vlasti za 2006. godinu koji je potpisao Potpredsjednik Vlade Damir Polančec. Međutim, na popisu među 195 stavki nema Hrvatske radiotelevizije što znači da ona neće morati odgovarati na upite u skladu sa Zakonom o pravu na pristup informacijama.

La Justicia Federal autorizó a dos ONG a tener acceso a la causa que investiga el posible pago de coimas en el Senado. El pedido había sido presentado por la Asociación Civil por la Igualdad y la Justicia (ACIJ) y el Centro de Investigación y Prevención contra la Criminalidad Económica (CIPCE).

Rene Preval won the election, but in a letter to the U.N. special envoy in Haiti, the Haiti Support Group asks about the charges of fraud and vote-rigging that have not yet been addressed. The group calls for a thorough and transparent investigation into the allegations before confidence in the electoral authorities can be resotred.

Last thursday, 2 February, the “Civil Society Forum” informal initiative that gathers a number of Croatian NGOs, came out with strong accusations against the activities of the National Foundation for Development of Civil Society in 2005. The Foundation is accused of fostering conflict of interests of its governing body members; the inexistence of supervisory or body that would receive complaints; unclear evaluation procedures; unclear financial operations; lack of programming profiling and unjustified expenditures.

A U.N. panel of sanction experts has urged the authorities in neighboring countries to crack down on unofficial arms shipments to Sudan. Weapons continue to spill into the troubled Darfur region of Western Sudan in direct violation of an arms embargo in place since 2004, and the panel reports that rebel groups are also receiving financial and political support from neighbors.

Nelle scorse settimane il presidente della Repubblica Carlo Azeglio Ciampi è stato in visita in Sicilia. In una delle tappe del suo viaggio ha lanciato un vero e proprio appello alla società civile e alla politica a battersi contro la mafia, contro questa struttura criminale che non è e non può essere invincibile. Parole importanti, ma che hanno un peso ancora più importante dato il luogo da cui sono state lanciate: Ragusa. Probabilmente nessuno ha informato il Presidente di questo, ma a pochi chilometri, forse metri, da dove lui ha pronunciato il suo discorso vive Carlo Ruta. Carlo è un giornalista d'inchiesta che da tantissimi mesi sta subendo una vera e propria persecuzione per il suo impegno nel documentare e denunciare i poteri forti ragusani. Nel dicembre 2004 il suo sito viene oscurato e chiuso d'autorità. Inizia un calvario che dura tutt'ora, un calvario fatto di accanimenti giudiziari e intimidazioni. Ma Carlo non si è mai arreso.

Water activists and non governmental organisations in north and central India have joined hands to fight water privatization initiatives by Indian state governments, oppose World Bank funding, discourage the $200 billion river-linking project, encourage conservation and provide for alternative water policies. Living up to her name and keeping true to her promises, "Iron Lady" Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has taken a decisive step towards curbing corruption in Liberia. She dismissed every political appointee from the previous administration at the ministry of finance and official investigations of ministry staff will be conducted by a former World Bank official.

The Transparency International (TI) said the Bangladesh government has failed to curb corruption in the country as it formed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) not out of "political will" but as a "concession" to the donor and civil society pressure.

The Indian state of Chhattisgarh seems to be a favourite hunting ground for MNCs looking for plant varieties. An attempt by Swiss MNC Syngenta was thwarted two years back but this time the germplasm of 18 local varieties of Jatropha have been stolen. These varieties are considered to have high oil content and disease and drought resistance qualities.
