President Bush: Dedicating 0.7% of the U.S. budget to the poor “doesn't fit our budgetary process.”
29/06/2005 A new report by the Brookings Institution shows President Bush has significantly exaggerated the amount of aid his administration has provided to sub-Saharan Africa. With the approaching G8 summit and recent aid commitments made by E.U. nations, Bush is facing increasing pressure to be more cooperative internationally and encourage the efforts of poor countries.

Does world trade favor the rich and forget the environment?
27/06/2005 The G-8 summit will focus on two global problems that have long been at odds--poverty and global warming. But an innovative plan led by Papua New Guinea and Costa Rica shows how poor countries can commit to greenhouse gas limits while promoting development--by providing them market incentives to maintain the environment.

A Chicago Public Housing Resident with Peppers from Her Garden
24/06/2005 A new report from Food First shows that world food imports make hungry people hungrier, while undermining local economies and fueling climate change. No matter where you are, buying your food from local farmers alleviates climate change and lessens rural poverty.

Trade Liberalization has Cost Africa $272 Billion
21/06/2005 New research by Christian Aid finds that sub-Saharan Africa lost billions of dollars after being forced to open their markets to imports. In 20 years, trade liberalization cost Africa the same amount it received in aid--money that as income could have eliminated Africa's debt and been invested in agriculture, health, and education.

16/06/2005 A recent Wall Street Journal feature helped spread awareness about many of Coca-Cola's abuses in India, but the article let the company off the hook in several irrefutable respects and failed to properly characterize the massive grassroots movement behind the campaign to hold Coke to account, says the India Resource Center.

10/06/2005 In 2002, the Bush Administration de-funded the UN Population Fund over charges it was complicit in forced sterilizations in China. Though the allegations proved false, the $34 million continues to sit unused each year; but in the latest effort to put it to good use, several lawmakers are trying to earmark the money for the fight against a debilitating childbirth condition affecting millions of young women around the world.

08/06/2005 It seems like yesterday that American philosopher Francis Fukuyama proclaimed the "end of history" -- celebrating the collapse of communism and the ascendance of a global neoliberal order. Today John Ralston Saul can credibly proclaim (in his new book, The Collapse of Globalism) the "end of globalization." I'm not quite ready to write globalization's obituary. But a couple of big nails were hammered into the coffin last week, one in Europe, one in China.

The Countries Involved in the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)
07/06/2005 Recent criticisms that the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) would devastate Central American farmers, slacken environmental enforcement, and undermine basic governmental services ignore a critical issue, writes Aldo Caliari. Buried in the agreement are rules that would make it more difficult for poorer nations to escape heavy debt burdens.
