Even as it connects the world, globalisation is creating a sense of alienation, injustice and inequality amongst communities. 24X7 media coverage of the controversy over the Danish cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed has reinforced this sense of alienation.

The recommendation by the National Commission on Farmers (NCF), headed by Professor M. S. Swaminathan, to make India a single common market for agricultural produce is not new. Indeed, the government is already committed to doing so.

Associations involved in the Coalition of Green Activist Groups (KZAG) reacted on the position of the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the EU violates the trade agreement for its refusal to allow genetically modified organizms (GMOs) and demanded from the Government to take the side of the countries that are pressured by the WTO, to take all necessary measures to oppose the WTO’s lethal effects on national agriculture, nature and citizens of Croatia.

A relook at the issue of domestic regulation in education in the context of emerging privatization and internationalization of education is needed. India had a long tradition of multi stake partnership in the education sector. The practice of public and private partnership in the education sector within a regulatory framework under the Constitution of India is evident at all the level of education. The different regulatory bodies are formed at different time to maintain the standards of education.

Water activists and non governmental organisations in north and central India have joined hands to fight water privatization initiatives by Indian state governments, oppose World Bank funding, discourage the $200 billion river-linking project, encourage conservation and provide for alternative water policies. OneWorld South Asia's Rahul Kumar reports from the convention.

The conflict between growth and inequality is an old one. It is an important one too. Especially so in the present Indian context where the close and parallel coexistence of a few centuries cannot escape even the eyes of the most casual observer. We can not deny that recently there has been growth in some sectors. Neither can we dispute that this growth has been rather miserly in its trickling down effects. So, before we start applauding the radiant performance of the economy, we must face the question of inequality of income distribution squarely and firmly. How serious is the state of inequality in India compared to other countries?
