24/01/2008 A slowdown in economic growth could spur global unemployment by 5 million persons in 2008, with unemployment rates touching levels never seen before, predicts the International Labour Organization’s annual Global Employment Trends (GET) report. The report also notes South Asia as having the highest share of vulnerable jobs and workers without a voice at work.

23/01/2008 International Labour Organisation’s new report says that ending poverty in South Asia will require labour market reforms coupled with economic progress. The report notes that instances of extreme poverty have impressively come down in the last decade but proportion of working poor continues to remain high in the region.

Along with sub-Saharan Africa, India has been identified with high under-five mortality in UNICEF’s new report on the state of the world’s children. It calls for community-level integration of essential services to arrest this disturbing phenomenon.

22/01/2008 “La maggior parte dei campi profughi in Darfur è piena di armi. La situazione della sicurezza dentro e fuori dai campi continua a peggiorare, mentre le speranze di una soluzione politica al conflitto in Darfur si riducono e le ostilità tra il governo e i gruppi armati seguitano a intensificarsi”. Lo afferma Amnesty International che ha reso noto oggi il rapporto "Sfollati in Darfur: una generazione di rabbia", in cui descrive l’attuale stato di insicurezza nei campi profughi nell’area, le potenziali conseguenze e le possibili soluzioni. "I gruppi armati continuano a usare i campi per reclutare combattenti, inclusi i bambini" - denuncia Amnesty. Ieri è arrivato in visita a Khartoum Jean-Marie Guéhenno, reponsabile della Forza di peacekeeping dell'Onu per valutare le operazioni della Forza Onu in Darfur.

The Gender Database will provide records on violence against women and trafficking in the South Asia region, and on women’s health and HIV/AIDS.

15/01/2008 Positiva reazione della Rete Disarmo alle dichiarazioni del Ministro degli Esteri Massimo D'Alema che nel corso dell'ultima trasmissione televisiva di "Che tempo che fa" ha affermato che "la questione del disarmo deve tornare nell'agenda della comunità internazionale anche perché ci si è dimenticati di questo grande obiettivo". La Rete Disarmo accoglie positivamente la volontà espressa di porre il disarmo al centro dell'agenda politica del Governo Italiano, in particolare in occasione della prossima presidenza del G8, ma chiede azioni e fatti concreti: a cominciare dal "Trattato internazionale sul commercio di armamenti" (ATT) in sede Onu, al sostegno alla legge di iniziativa popolare per dichiarare il nostro paese 'Zona libera da armi nucleari', ad un'azione forte per la messa al bando delle cluster bombs senza dimenticare la ripresa del confronto con la società civile sulle esportazioni di armi italiane e le spese militari che in questi ultimi due anni hanno visto, invece, un forte incremento.
